NFPA 70B Explained: What It Covers and Who Needs It

NFPA 70B is the Standard for Electrical Equipment Maintenance. It tells facility owners how to set up and run an electrical maintenance program: which equipment to inspect, how to rate its condition, how often to test it and what to record. Since the 2023 edition it has been a standard written in mandatory language. Earlier editions were a recommended practice.

This guide is for facility managers, electrical engineers, maintenance contractors and safety officers who have been told to comply with NFPA 70B and want to know what that involves before buying the book.

What does NFPA 70B cover?

NFPA 70B covers the preventive maintenance of electrical, electronic and communication systems and equipment in industrial, commercial, institutional and large residential facilities. Its aim is fewer equipment failures, less unplanned downtime and safer conditions for the people who work on the equipment.

The 2023 edition deals with:

  • setting up and documenting an electrical maintenance program
  • assessing the condition of each piece of equipment
  • testing methods and system studies
  • maintenance of specific equipment, assemblies, cables and devices
  • equipment that sits through long shutdown intervals

What changed in the 2023 edition of NFPA 70B?

The 2023 edition turned NFPA 70B from a recommended practice into a standard, so its maintenance requirements read as “shall” where they used to read as “should”. That is the change most people are reacting to when they ask about 70B.

Published summaries of the 2023 edition describe three practical consequences:

  • Inspection at least every 12 months. TÜV SÜD’s summary notes that all electrical equipment has to be inspected at least once a year, with more frequent checks for equipment in the poorest condition.
  • Condition ratings decide the interval. Equipment is rated on its physical condition (Condition 1, 2 or 3), its criticality and its operating environment. According to Miller Electric’s overview, the lowest of those ratings sets how often the equipment is maintained, and the intervals in NFPA 70B apply where the manufacturer gives none.
  • A documented program. Owners need a written electrical maintenance program, records of what was done, and system studies that are reviewed on a schedule.

Those are summaries. For the wording an inspector or insurer will hold you to, you need the standard itself.

Is NFPA 70B mandatory?

NFPA 70B is written as a mandatory standard, but it binds you only where something adopts it: a jurisdiction, an insurer, a client contract or your own company policy. If one of those names NFPA 70B, the maintenance program it describes is no longer optional for your site.

The Electrical Safety Foundation International describes the first step for owners as categorizing their equipment and noting how critical each item is.

NFPA 70 vs NFPA 70E vs NFPA 70B: which one do you need?

The three documents cover different stages of the same equipment’s life. NFPA 70 governs how it is installed, NFPA 70E governs how people work on it safely, and NFPA 70B governs how it is maintained.

DocumentWhat it governsWho uses it most
NFPA 70, National Electrical CodeInstallation of electrical wiring and equipmentElectricians, designers, inspectors
NFPA 70E, Standard for Electrical Safety in the WorkplaceSafe work practices around energized equipmentSafety officers, qualified electrical workers
NFPA 70B, Standard for Electrical Equipment MaintenanceMaintenance of equipment once it is in serviceFacility managers, maintenance teams, engineers

NFPA 70B is designed to be used with NFPA 70E, so most organizations that keep one keep both. If you are setting up a maintenance program from scratch, start with NFPA 70B, 2023 edition.

Which edition of NFPA 70B should you buy?

Buy the edition your requirement names. NFPA 70B has two editions written as a standard: 2023 and 2026. The 2026 edition is the current one on NFPA’s own catalog.

We stock the 2023 edition (ISBN-13 9781455929719), the first edition issued as a standard. It is the right book if your contract, insurer, inspector or company program cites NFPA 70B 2023.

If your requirement cites the 2026 edition, you need NFPA 70B, 2026 edition. NFPA lists these changes for 2026:

  • the P-F curve method (potential failure to functional failure) as a way to set maximum maintenance intervals
  • a requirement to set a timeline for equipment repairs and corrections, so they are not left open
  • more detail on most tasks in the inspection and testing tables of the equipment chapters
  • a new Chapter 39 on transfer switches
  • more consistent chapters, tables and terminology

Different editions are different books, and one does not stand in for the other. If you are not sure which year applies, ask whoever is holding you to the standard before you order.

Frequently asked questions

Who needs NFPA 70B?

Facility managers, electrical engineers, maintenance professionals, safety officers and inspectors who are responsible for how electrical systems perform. It is aimed at sites that run, or need to start, an electrical preventive maintenance program.

Do I need NFPA 70E as well as NFPA 70B?

Usually, yes. NFPA 70B covers maintaining the equipment and NFPA 70E covers protecting the people who do that work. The two are written to be used together.

How often does NFPA 70B require equipment to be inspected?

Published summaries of the 2023 edition give 12 months as the longest interval between inspections, with shorter intervals for equipment rated in poor condition. Check the standard for the interval that applies to each equipment type.

Does NFPA 70B cover equipment that sits idle?

Yes. The 2023 edition includes guidance for equipment, assemblies, cables and devices that go through extended shutdown intervals.

How long does delivery take?

Delivery takes 5 working days to the USA, Canada, Great Britain, France, Italy, Spain and Germany, and longer to other countries. Every order gets a tracking ID after dispatch. Delivery is free on orders of $50 or more, and returns are accepted within 30 days.
