Description
Safeguard your community and ensure compliant propane installations with the NFPA 58, Liquefied Petroleum Gas Code, 2020 Edition. This code is the industry benchmark for the safe storage, handling, transportation, and use of LP-Gas (propane). It is a mandatory resource for propane marketers, AHJs, insurance professionals, and facility managers who need to mitigate risks and prevent failures, leaks, and explosions.
The 2020 Edition includes vital updates to address modern safety challenges. A major change involves the inspection of face seals on cylinder connections; operators must now check CGA 791 and CGA 793 connections for defects before filling, and if found, the valve must be replaced. The code also clarifies fire extinguisher protocols, stating they should not be used on LP-Gas pressure fires unless the fuel source can be promptly shut off. Additionally, Chapter 15 (Operations and Maintenance) has been substantially revised to focus on bulk and industrial plants not regulated by the DOT.
Key Updates in the 2020 Edition:
-
Face Seal Inspections: Mandatory visual inspection of face seals on CGA 791 and CGA 793 connections prior to filling to prevent leaks.
-
Fire Extinguisher Use: New guidance prohibiting the use of extinguishers on pressure fires unless the fuel source is isolated.
-
Schedule 10 Piping: Now permitted for use in aboveground vapor service applications.
-
Operations & Maintenance (Chapter 15): Revised scope to exclude DOT-regulated systems, focusing on private bulk and industrial plant safety.
-
Fire Resistance: New definitions and requirements for fire resistance ratings and noncombustible materials.
