Description
NFPA 72, National Fire Alarm and Signaling Code, 2019 edition
The NFPA 72 2019 edition fully incorporates carbon monoxide detection requirements into the code, retiring the separate NFPA 720 standard. That makes NFPA 72 the single source for both fire and CO alarm requirements.
This edition also accounts for newer building technology and evacuation strategies, adding parameters for Occupant Evacuation Elevators that coordinate with ASME A17.1, and refining the rules for Class N pathways so Ethernet and other non-life-safety networks can be used to interconnect systems.
This listing is the 2019 edition. NFPA now lists a 2025 edition of NFPA 72, so check which year your jurisdiction, contract or exam cites before you order.
Carbon monoxide integration and battery maintenance
CO detection and warning requirements, formerly covered by NFPA 720, are now built into Chapters 14, 17 and 29. Chapter 14 also updates the inspection and testing protocols for valve-regulated lead-acid (VRLA) batteries used in fire alarm systems.
Elevator evacuation and control unit changes
Requirements for Occupant Evacuation Elevators are revised for elevator shutdown, signage and smoke detection, coordinating with ASME A17.1 to support safer elevator-assisted evacuations. Fire alarm control units now have mandatory minimum and maximum mounting heights of 1.5 feet to 5.5 feet for accessibility, and the term “strobes” is replaced throughout with “visual notification appliances” to reflect the shift to LED technology.
