Description
2024 International Plumbing Code (IPC)
The 2024 International Plumbing Code, published by the International Code Council, sets the minimum requirements for plumbing systems in new and existing buildings. It covers water supply and distribution, sanitary drainage and venting, and it is the standard plumbers, inspectors and engineers use to check that installations meet current health and safety rules.
This edition moves to a single column layout with wider margins and adds QR codes next to sections that changed, so a reader can jump straight to a summary of what is new instead of comparing the whole code line by line.
Underground piping and testing methods
Section 306.2.4 now requires tracer wire on buried non-metallic piping, so the line can be located later without digging it up. The code also adds vacuum testing as an approved method for primary drainage and vent system tests, an alternative to water or air pressure testing, and it updates the exceptions for using primer on solvent-cemented joints in certain non-pressure applications.
Roof drains and backflow protection
The 2024 edition clarifies installation and testing requirements for roof drainage systems and sets new backflow protection standards for chemical dispensers connected to the water supply.
