Description
2021 International Plumbing Code (IPC)
The 2021 International Plumbing Code sets minimum regulations for plumbing systems, using both prescriptive and performance related provisions. It is published by the International Code Council and used by plumbing inspectors, architects, engineers and contractors to keep drainage, venting and water supply work sanitary and safe for building occupants.
This edition updates the previous code in several areas: restroom design, pipe materials, sewer repair methods and rainwater systems. The changes below are the ones a buyer moving up from an earlier edition needs to know.
Multi-user toilet facilities
The 2021 code adds provisions for multi-user toilet facilities that serve all genders, with standards for stall and urinal privacy and for fixture counts. This is new to the 2021 edition.
Materials, drainage and rainwater
Push-fit DWV fittings are now permitted for PVC and ABS piping systems. The code adds two new methods for relining and rehabilitating existing building sewers, and removable traps or fixtures with integral traps can now be accepted as equivalent to cleanouts. For rainwater harvesting, the code adopts CSA B805/ICC 805 as an alternative design standard, and it adds new accommodations for locating rooftop solar panels over vent terminals.
