2018 International Mechanical Code (IMC)
The 2018 International Mechanical Code sets minimum regulations for mechanical systems, using prescriptive and performance related provisions. Published by the International Code Council, it covers HVAC, exhaust systems, boilers and refrigeration, and is used by mechanical contractors, engineers and inspectors.
This edition adds a new section for warehouse fans, expands duct and pipe material options, and updates commercial kitchen and parking garage rules. The changes below reflect new equipment and materials that were not addressed in earlier editions.
Fans, ducts and refrigerants
A new Section 929 covers the installation and listing of High Volume Large Diameter (HVLS) fans, which are increasingly common in warehouses. The code adds standards for non-metallic phenolic ductwork and clarifies rules for duct and pipe insulation in plenums. It also recognizes A2L refrigerants as an option for cooling equipment.
Kitchens, garages and piping
New provisions require pollution control units in grease exhaust systems to extract smoke and odors, with specific clearance exceptions for Type I hoods. The intermittent operation rules for parking garage exhaust systems are clarified so the systems cycle between full and minimum rates rather than shutting off completely. Schedule 10 steel pipe is now permitted for mechanical systems, expanding material options beyond Schedule 40.
